IPHEDIA - National Monument (Monas) or known as Monas Monument whose construction was formally dated August 17, 1961 is a 132 meter high or 433 foot memorial monument erected to commemorate the resistance and struggle of the Indonesian people in seizing independence from the Dutch East Indies colonial government.

The construction of the monument on Medan Merdeka Selatan Street, Central Jakarta began on August 17, 1961 under the orders of the first President of Indonesia, Ir Sukarno, and was opened to the public on July 12, 1975. The monument was crowned with flames coated in gold sheets symbolizing the spirit of the struggle that blazing on.

When first made, the gold used to coat the flames weighed 35 kilograms. But, in 1995 when Indonesia celebrated the 50th anniversary of independence which was 50 years, the gold layer was added up to weighing 50 kilograms.

The construction of the National Monument consists of three stages between 1961 / 1962-1964 / 1965. The design of the Monas monument is based on the concept of an eternal universal couple; Lingga and Yoni. Lingga and Yoni are symbols of fertility and harmonious unity that complement each other from prehistoric times in Indonesia.

The towering obelisk pillar is a phallus which symbolizes men, an active and positive masculine element, and symbolizes daylight. While the platform of the base of the obelisk is Yoni which symbolizes women, feminine elements that are passive and negative, and symbolizes the night.

In addition, the form of the National Monument can also be interpreted as a pair of "pestle" and "Lesung", a rice pounding tool found in every household of traditional Indonesian farmers. Thus the design of Monas is full of distinctive dimensions of Indonesian culture. Monas Monument is also the National Library with a total of 24 floors and three basements this is the tallest library building in the world. (as/rs)
