THE ALTON BARNES WHITE HORSE in England

In 1812, a farmer named Robert Pile paid £ 20 to a man named Jack the Painter (a painter) to design and cut a horse to a hillside in Wiltshire, England. This is one of nine horse paintings cut into the hills in this area.

No one knows why the design was carved from the hill. It was then packed with chalk so that it stood out prominently white. Jack the Painter then subcontracts the work to others.
