A 16th century heritage garden complex built by Mughals adjacent to Humayun's Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Delhi, India, named this Sunder Nursery, formerly known as Azim Bagh or Bagh-e-Azeem.
Today, the Sunder Nursery which is located on the Grand Trunk Road contains fifteen heritage monuments, 6 of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Archaeological Survey of India or ASI which protects the Sundarwala Burj, Sundarwala Mahal and Lakkarwala Burj.
UNESCO World Heritage status has been granted to six buildings, namely the Sunder Nursery - Sunder Burj, Sundarwala Mahal, Lakkarwala Burj, Mirza Muazzafar Hussain's Tomb, Chotta Bateshewala, and the Unknown Mughal Tomb.
After renovations began in 2007, the complex reopened to the public as a heritage park on February 21, 2018. Now the park contains more than 300 types of trees, making it New Delhi's first arboretum.
During British rule, tree planting was practiced to grow experimental plants, which gave it its current designation as a nursery.
The "Sunder" part name comes from the tomb of Sunder Burj which is located at the same place. Although it is called the Sunder Nursery, after renovation it has been called the 'Central Park of Delhi'.
The park complex contains more than 280 species of native trees. Using GIS there are 4200 trees mapped. In addition, there are about 80 types of birds and 36 types of butterflies. The Bonsai House is home to several bonsai that are over 80 years old.
As an arboretum in New Delhi, Sunder Nursery is home to several rare trees such as the Pink Cedar Tree (Acrocarpus fraxinifolius), the only one in New Delhi.
Various other trees in the nursery are also found only here and nowhere else in New Delhi, such as Chukka (Croton roxburghii) and Carrotwood (Cupaniopsis anacardioides). (as/ip)
