The Unique and Amazing Mount Rainbow at China's Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park

This area is quickly becoming a popular tourist attraction for Zhangye City, especially after UNESCO has established it on the World Heritage List.

IPHEDIA.com - The natural phenomenon in the form of a colorful mountain (rainbow mountain) like a rainbow in China had a chance to shock the virtual world. The phenomenon was further revealed after various amateur writings and videos added new facts about the existence of colorful curved cliffs in Zhangye City, in Gansu Province, China.

The Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park covers an area of 510 square kilometers (200 sq mi). Previously, the provincial park and scenic area became a national geopark in November 2011.

This rainbow mountain is amazing because the hills and valleys are composed of layers of red, blue, emerald green, brown, and yellow. Interestingly, in that place found no plants or animals because of the condition of the barren land.

The amazing colors of the hills come from red sandstone and minerals that have formed since the Cretaceous, precisely 24 million years ago. The rock formation then underwent tectonic plate shift which also formed the Himalayan mountains.

Rain and winds that hit the area for millions of years also contributed to forming niches, valleys, and the color patterns of Zhangye Danxia. That said, this mountain will display different color patterns, depending on weather conditions.

This area is quickly becoming a popular tourist attraction for Zhangye City. A number of sidewalks and roads have been built to encourage visitors to explore the amazing rock formations, especially after UNESCO established them on the World Heritage List at the 34th meeting held in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, on August 1, 2010.

When Danaxia Landform was first known to the public through photographs circulating in cyberspace, many considered the rainbow pattern as a result of photoshop edits and computer engineering. However, in fact this rainbow mountain is indeed original. Now, the place has become one of the most sought-after attractions in China which generates quite high incomes for Zhangye residents.
